Why should you consolidate debts? Let's see....to save money, to get out of debt sooner, to improve your credit....
Do You Really Need a Reason?
You shouldn't. The benefit of getting rid of your debts is a no-brainer. There are actually a lot of benefits:
- Freedom from debt within five years
- The end of creditor harassment
- Improved credit
- One monthly bill when you consolidate debts instead of several
Here's how it works: When you make the wise decision to consolidate debts, a debt consolidation company will contact your creditors to get you massive reductions in interest rates. Sometimes they can even convince your creditors to remove past "junk" fees (like late fees, over-the-limit fees, etc.). All of these reductions translate into lower balances. The debt consolidation company then combines these balances into one, and you make a payment to them each month which they split among your creditors. Your creditors are legally required to stop contacting you about your debt, and after a few on-time payments, they can be convinced to "re-age" your accounts, meaning they will start reporting them as current instead of behind, which immediately improves your credit!
If you want to try to consolidate debts on your own, the best way to go about it is to get a credti card with a 0% introductory rate and transfer your credit card balances to it--assuming credit card debt is the bulk of your debt. Some credit card companies will include checks you can use to pay off medical bills and other unsecured debts that aren't credit card debts. Be very careful when doing this though--you want to make sure it's not treated like a cash advance. If it is, you'll just sink yourself further into debt. Also be sure the card you choose has no annual fee and no balance transfer fees. That's just plain 'ol good advice.
Whichever method you choose to consolidate debts, you're going to save a lot of money in interest. Tons! So don't lollygag around about it. Get started today you you can be free of that pesky debt sooner!
